INTERCIDS will participate in the event “Time for the EU to stop octopus farming,” organized by Eurogroup for Animals and Compassion in World Farming (CIWF). The event, which will include both in-person and online expert presentations, will take place on December 2nd 2025 at the European Parliament.
During this event, María González Lacabex, attorney specialized in Animal Law and Environmental Law and coordinator of INTERCIDS’ legislative team, will make a brief presentation regarding our legislative proposal to preemptively ban octopus farming in Spain, including the commerce of octopus derived from this activity. INTERCID’s legislative proposal, the first in Europe, has already been registered in as a bill in the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
María González Lacabex’s presentation will take place within a panel dedicated to analyzing European and national legislative avenues for preventing the industrial farming of octopuses, a practice that raises serious ethical, environmental, and animal welfare concerns.
The event will bring together members of the European Parliament, professionals from the scientific field, marine policy experts, and political representatives from various countries to discuss the urgent need to end octopus aquaculture in the European Union and move towards a ban on both its production and import.
Participants include MEP Emma Fourreau, MEP Isabella Lövin, Dr. Jennifer Jacquet, Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Miami, researcher and Marine Biologist, Elena Lara (CIWF), and Spanish Member of Parliament, Jorge Pueyo.
INTERCIDS welcomes the fact that the legal work carried out by our organization is a central and inspirational part of this debate at the European level and calls for the promotion of legislative bans on octopus farming across Europe.
